1. As many of you know through the communication of social media, Christy and I are new and first-time grandparents. William George Hardy, was born to our son William and daughter-in-law Shannon on Wednesday, April 24th. Everyone is doing well and “Liam,” the nickname they are calling him, is doing well and growing. I have had to remember all my baby skills; I have changed diapers, worn a shirt with a milk spit up stains, and just have had a good time holding my new grandson. I can’t wait to introduce him to our dogs, fly fishing, hunting, pocket knives, and all the good and fun stuff we can do.
2. Next, I had the great opportunity to see the working farm of the son and his partner of our good friends Fred and Elaine Berry. Ben Berry and Kathleen Smith, college graduates, partners in life, and business owners have now entered the world of commerce and entrepreneurship. These two young people have envisioned their dream of a productive organic farm. The have taken on debt, bought equipment, plowed fields, put up deer deterrent fencing, and planted a lot of crops to take to our local farmer’s markets in Greensboro and Raleigh. Their farm, called “Root Down Farm” is located outside of Mebane, NC. These two hard working young people are making it go! You can find Ben every Saturday morning at the downtown Greensboro Farmer’s Market and Kathleen at the Raleigh Farmer’s Market. Their produce is really good and fresh, plus they say that throughout this coming summer a full variety of produce will be available.
What makes me so proud of my friend’s children is their willingness to live and work and get down and dirty. They’ve chosen to follow a dream, conquer the uncontrollable, and get dirty and sweaty while doing it. They truly believe in themselves and their vision. I can’t help to believe they will be successful! So go and see them any Saturday and tell Ben and Kathleen, “way to go” and buy some produce!
3. The third good news piece in this wave of good news was when the Dow Jones Industrial Average hit 15,000 with indications this too may be a good year for the market. The Federal Reserve’s QE programs appears to be one of the stimuli that is driving the markets but economic data continues to strengthen ever so slowly. We all know that eventually there are debt issues, budget issues, and interest rate concerns that will need to be addressed and solved, but for now, it appears that the Federal Reserve will stay the course into 2014. As always, we will continue to navigate the market as it presents its challenges and opportunities and keep our clients informed.
So there you have it: a beautiful grandson, renewal in the American dream and a record day for the stock market. I hope you too are experiencing a positive delivery of 3’s! We’ll stay in touch on Liam and the market, and go see Ben and Kathleen.
