SECU Family House Kitchen Shower!
As you may remember, in March Gib and John took part in the SECU Family House “Men Who Cook” competition. Not only did they have a very fun evening helping to raise money for the SECU Family House, but they also WON for best taste!
While Gib and John plan to return next year to defend their title, they felt they could do more! That’s why for the month of August we’re hosting a SECU Family House Kitchen Shower!
What is the SECU Family House?
The SECU Family House on the Richard J. Reynolds, III & Marie M. Reynolds Campus provides affordable lodging in a caring environment for referred adult patients and/or their caregivers who travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., for medical treatment. Winston-Salem is a medical community with two nationally ranked medical centers and limited affordable lodging for adult patients and their families.
Caregivers often must camp out in hospital waiting rooms, hallways, and in their cars. Hospital personnel observe that many very sick patients are more concerned about their family’s living situation than about their own recovery.
Approximately 400 families of inpatients from both hospitals require lodging each night. In addition, dozens of outpatients with serious conditions and their caregivers need accommodations.
Staff and volunteers are on site at all times to assist the more than 2,000 families a year who will stay at the House, as well as the outpatients who will come for day respite in between treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy.
Referrals to SECU Family House can be made by staff at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and by Hospice & Palliative CareCenter.
Tell Me About the Facility?
SECU Family House is located on 8.8 acres of property on 1970 Baldwin Lane (at the end of Hospice Ln) in Winston-Salem, a site convenient to both Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center and Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Features include:
• 45 guest rooms, each with two queen beds and private bath • Common living, dining, and kitchen areas • Chapel for meditation • Laundry facilities • Outdoor patio areas • Support from staff, volunteers and other families • Referrals from Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and Hospice & Palliative CareCenter/Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home • $35 night per room. Applications for financial assistance are available upon request.
What is the SECU Family House Kitchen Shower?
We’ve all been to a shower before, right? Whether it’s a bridal shower, baby shower, or a couples shower. Well, we’re hosting a Kitchen Shower, where we are welcoming donations of kitchen items to help stock the SECU Kitchen!
The kitchen is the center of any family gathering. At parties or family get-togethers, the comfort of preparing meals and eating just brings people together! The same is true at the SECU Family House! Unfortunately the kitchen is not stocked very well. The items get used so frequently that if they are not of a high quality they break or need to be thrown away after only a few uses! We would like to help by helping to provide nice, new, high quality kitchen items to make the stay at the SECU Family House a little more like home.
How Can I Help?
We are going to have donation boxes set up in our Greensboro and Winston-Salem office for the entire month of August. You are invited to stop by at any time during normal office hours to drop off your donation! THEN, on Wednesday, September 7th we are going to host an Open House at the SECU Family House to present them with all the items we’ve collected! You are invited to join us that night for wine and appetizers and to tour the facility! (and we promise no crazy shower games!)
